Summary: A few decent things, but little substance
Comment: Given that there are so few books out there on Teradata, it would be wise to focus on Teradata specific items and leave standard SQL programming to other books. There are 2 chapters on Queryman, which is really way too much paper used for that utility. Exercises for SQL coding definitely could be left out of this book.
Left out of this book is detailed information on data types and how Teradata uses them(difference between float vs. decimal). As well as database management, user creation, priveleges, etc..
Some good points are a general overview of how Teradata works and its strucutural philosophy. Good detail regarding Explains, general information on indexing and joins, and how Teradata handles different table types.
This definitely is NOT the 'Ultimate Companion'. I have experience with DB2 and Oracle, but not a DBA in any sense. I was able to get through this book and glean all of the useful info in about 20 minutes. Most of the other things in this book you can find out in a general SQL manual and the NCR Teradata product documentation. If this overpriced book is the ultimate companion, I am afraid of what one would be paying for the other Coffing books.
