Summary: Ultimate History of the Rock
Comment: Many books have been written about Alcatraz, or rather about aspects of its history (i.e., prison life as recounted by former inmates or accounts of the sensational escape attempts), but Michael Esslinger has compiled the first complete definitive history of The Rock. From fortress to military prison to federal penitentiary through the "Indian Occupation" and right down to its present status as a National Park. All the escape attempts are covered in detail, as are the infamous inmates, and the political maneuverings that led to both the rise and fall of Alcatraz. Even Alcatraz movies are examined and both the similarities and contrasts of the real "Birdman," Robert Stroud, with the character portrayed by Burt Lancaster, are startling. Though boasting an extensive bibliography, the book is the end product of original research at its finest, being based largely on Bureau of Prison records, FBI files, contemporary news accounts, and interviews with many former Alcatraz inmates and officials. And this scholarly and well-written work is a visual delight at 450 pages and with hundreds of photos. Also included is a complete listing of all Alcatraz inmates. The first truly factual work on a much sensationalized chapter of American history, it's an endlessly fascinating book and makes for great reading.

Comment: Michael Esslinger brilliantly weaves first-hand accounts, testimony and exhaustive research in this incredible book about the Real Alcatraz. The famous escape attempts, celebrated felons and routine of the Rock are explored in thorough insight and detail from those who knew the prison best. After reading this book, one is amazed by the different perceptions and awareness created from this masterpiece. I will never look at the Rock again when I visit next, and neither will you.

Esslinger shines while diaplaying the vivid detail and stories of those who lived on the Rock from its days as a military prison to its closure. A must read for anyone wanting to know about the real Alcatraz, not what has been fabricated and sensationalized in movies or the media.

A Sensational and Incredible read that you must own today!!!

Summary: Truly the definitive work
Comment: After having read close to 20 books on Alcatraz (I'm hoplessly fascinated by the island's story ever since my first visit there as an 11-year old) I picked this book up with the hope that it would be, as it claims to be, the definitive work.

It is. With the help of close to 1.000 photographs Esslinger effortlessly tells the story from beginning to end without writing clichés about the "Devil's Rock" or misguided rumors of guard brutality. Fascinating and vital reading.
