In our culture we frequently look to the providers of psychotherapy for insights regarding equilibrium fulfillment in life. Annellen and C. Alexander Simpkins are a husband and wife team who have devoted their careers to the explication of the process of psychotherapy. In their latest offering, Timeless Teachings from the Therapy Masters, the Simpkins have done a superb job in highlighting factors that are germane to the process of psychotherapy. Their examination of six hallmark figures in psychotherapy theory, research and practice must be described as intimate, insightful and enlightening. The text incorporates the Simpkins' years of study, observation and systematic interviews of Jerome D. Frank, John C. Whitehorn, Carl Rogers, Arthur Combs, Milton H. Erickson and G. Wilson Shaffer with specific focus on what makes psychotherapy work. The Drs. Simpkins, who have written a number of books on Eastern mysticism as well as a classic on Hypnotism, write and communicate skillfully and effectively.

Timeless Teachings is illustrated throughout with luminous abstract expressionist paintings by Carmen Z. Simpkins. These, together with her dramatic cover painting, greatly enhance the effect of the text. The body of the book is divided into five sections reflective of the six most influential teachers in the Simpkins' professional career: Jerome D. Frank, John C. Whitehorn, Carl Rogers, Arthur Combs, Milton H. Erickson, and G. Wilson Shaffer. Each carefully designed section begins with a skillful interview of the featured teacher by the authors. These set forth the teachers' main theses as well as their most deeply held beliefs about and experiences with their work. The center section details and further explains the methodology of each teacher; the last sections give suggestions for exercises, meditations, and other ways to experience the truths of the teachings.

Photographs of those interviewed as well as quotes from them further illuminate this interesting book. It is easy to read, and it consistently communicates important information. I found myself underlining and starring many sentences and paragraphs throughout the text.
