Summary: a perfect cellar
Comment: This is a great book. It tells you/shows you how to evaluate your house, and all the variables surrounding, for a perfect wine cellar. While many may read and rise to the occasion thus building the R to the perfect digit, some may simply read and concede. There is a spoke of perfection in a house with a proper wine cellar; yet most are lack this. I thank this book for steering me to my current course of renting storage in a wine storage facility. I appreciate all the information but it would have been near impossible (checkbook included) for me to follow through.

Summary: Not Focused and a waste of money
Comment: The title shouldn't be "How and Why to Build...", but rather "Why, Why, Why, My thoughts on Wine and oh, by the way How to Build a Wine Cellar".
There is way too much information in this book. If your looking for an Engineering 101 text book, this is for you. I'm sure the author is very learned, but the chapter long discussions about temperature cycles, humidity, and various cooling methods are way over the top.
The part about actually building the cellar (which is less than 30 pages out of 248) is obviously written by someone with little experience in construction. His ultimate cellar is the single most over-engineered piece of construction that I've seen in my 20+ years as a builder. For any do-it-yourselfer who has enough confidence to attempt a project such as this, there is little in this book (construction-wise) beyond simple common sense. I particularly enjoyed the part about door building. Pure nonsense.
The second half the book has nothing to do with building a cellar, but rather planning tastings, lists of wine publications, and an ending that is nothing but the author's rambling thoughts about various aspects of wine.
IMO, don't waste your money.

Summary: It worked for me !
Comment: I read this book 18 months ago and I am just writing this review now because the only way to know if all of those principles and ideas really work is to put them into use and then monitor your wine temperatures for a year. I did and they do! I live in Minnesota and built a small cellar (cabinet, really). It holds about 150 bottles and is smaller than most. After reading this book, twice, I knew to place it in the Northeast shaded corner of my basement, build the walls to R-40, use no hardware that would conduct heat, and seal the opening well. The book is a fun read and is filled with all the info you need to build a storage spot for your wine. Don't buy good wine and store it badly !
