Summary: The Decision is Yours!
Comment: The decision is yours. Stay where you are in the 9-to-5 world or read Peter Bowerman's book, the Well-Fed Writer, and break out on your own. Bowerman answers almost every conceivable question you could have about freelance writing. He tells you how to do what it takes to go out on your own as well as the personal characteristics you must display to be a success as a freelancer. He doesn't mince words.
Bowerman uses the term FLCW (Freelance Commercial Writer) instead of copywriter because it sounds much more professional. In fact, professional is the name of the game. Everything in this book leads the writer down that pathway - no shoddy work will do. Bowerman states that writers with a little less skill and experience than others can still win in this business by showing a heightened sense of professionalism about their work.
I am thankful to Bev Walton-Porter, my workshop facilitator at www.scribequill.com, for directing me to this book. This is an excellent read. There's nothing boring about it. In fact, I think it just pointed me in the right direction.

Summary: This book motivated me like no other!!
Comment: With The Well-Fed Writer, Peter Bowerman managed to do what no other freelance how-to book could do for me -- he made me believe that I could actually become a self-supporting freelance writer. I've got a library full of books on writing, but none have been as enlightening as this one. He includes many important details other books leave out. Also, his comfortable, chatty style, liberally peppered with humor, made it as enjoyable to read as it was informative. I couldn't put it down, and now that I've finished it, I can't wait to get out there and put his lessons to use. He makes it sound almost too easy, but the proof is right there in his own experiences -- it works.

Summary: What's your hourly rate?
Comment: Have you ever wondered why freelancers are expected to work for pennies per hour? Peter Bowerman dispels the myth that writers must work for nearly nothing.
Did you know advertising agencies, public relations firms, graphic designers, multi-national corporations and event production companies are always looking for freelance writers? (Chapter 5 "Where's The Business?") This book tells you how to find the work, how to market yourself, and how to talk to a client about rates. In chapters like "What Will You Be Writing?" "So, What Does It Take to Be Successful?" and "Ready for Self-Employment?" you get a detailed picture of a day in the life of a commercial freelance writer.
In his engaging, just-like-I'm-sitting-next-to-you style, the author describes what it takes to become well-fed and have a freelancer's lifestyle. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to freelance successfully.
