Comment: Any amateur who has secret dreams of riding a Grand Prix Dressage test ought read this book as a reality check. Robin Brueckmann presents in a training diary format her joys and frustrations as she progressed through the levels of dressage competition with her horse Bordeaux from 1984-1998. Each chapter comprises one year. That span of time alone should be daunting to the dressage day-dreamer! A professional horsewoman, Robin devoted all her time, energy, and finances in the quest to reach the top. It is not surprising that it took an incredible commitment to train horse and rider to Grand Prix, but the description of hours and hours of physical, emotional and intellectual effort and the challenges involving many steps forward and back is highly instructive for all-particularly the part-time equestrian (such as this reviewer). This book, however, is not a manual for trainers who are interested in learning specific techniques to overcome the sort of obstacles that Robin faced. It is a personal story, a memoir, in which the author's love of and devotion to her horse are underscored by the book's title: two-Robin and Bordeaux- really seem to have become one, as they perform exhibitions at horseshows of Grand Prix movements BRIDLELESS. There really needs to be a video of some of their rides to accompany this book! Most amateur dressage enthusiasts, after reading this book, will see a third level test as a more reasonable and attainable and happier goal for their riding endeavors.
