Summary: Love breaks the silence!
Comment: The Silence of God
These poems celebrate the survival of the sacred in the human heart. They glow with feeling but at the same time are quite disciplined in their art. No Hallmark card sentiments here. While Hoffman regrets the withdrawal of religious awe from our daily life ("The Man Who Dreamed"), the poet's determined connection to his fellow woman and man is itself a form of reverence. Close and loving observation informs "White Cap" (about his mother), and I laughed out loud at the three poems dedicated to Bill Lowman in which Hoffman focuses this attention wryly upon himself. "A Song for Susan" is the kind of poem you wish you had written yourself-Hoffman so accurately captures the why of love as he watches his lover among her horses. Terror in the face of god's silence punctuates these poems and is, I think, what makes them so compelling. Terror of the void drives the need for human love. The lovers' passion in "Within These Walls" resonates with this need, and so does the graceful appreciation of a friend's goodness in "Dear One." I put down Hoffman's book with the feeling that it is hard and thoughtful work to make relationships that will push back the dark-but so very worth the effort.
