Summary: The best book on the subject!
Comment: I just finished the book, and have not as yet employed its methods, and so I can't speak to the efficacy of the methods described, but I will say that this book is a standout on the topic. Easily the best read I have found about starting your own label, and releasing records. Its biggest strength is that it is to the point, and the author definitely knows what he's talking about. Others books tend to be too wordy. This one demystifies the whole process, and only takes a couple of days to read!
The only drawbacks to this book, I would say, is that it is a little out of date as far as the whole computer and internet aspect, and it pretty much tells you that if you don't have a pretty large initial sum of money to get things rolling, you will not have any success. I have found that ingenuity can be a whole lot better than money in many cases. Anyway, see for yourself....

Summary: good in 1996 but showing its age in 2002
Comment: I think that there are a lot of really good things that you can learn from this book, but it's old and out of touch with what is happening today. As you can see from the other reviews, a lot of people think it is out of date and there are plenty of things that it just doesn't mention which should be part of your promotion plan these days. Like the Internet or mp3. Isn't that part of every band's plan now? This book doesn't even talk about that because it was written before any of that existed. It talks about college radio (does college radio exist anymore?) and passing out demo tapes. Definitely not worth [the money].

Summary: Good But not Always Practical
Comment: While Tim Sweeney's Guide to Releasing Independent Records is incrdibly insightful and helpful, at times I think he directs his suggestions more towards bands than singer-songwriters or indie artists. Also, I found that a lot of the expenses or investments he encourages, for example buying t-shirts and GIVING them away for FREE, don't really pay off, & aren't practical for most day-job struggling individuals. Definitely, these suggestions aren't for musicians on a budget. He attempts to suggest how to get the cash(loan or family), but he doesn't take into account that most singer-songwriters never really reap the profit from their expenditures (that or it takes a LONG time)... thus have to be careful.
However, he really knows his stuff, & I got a lot of things out of his book. Good stuff.
