Summary: Important Text for Social Work Educators
Comment: Editors Hugen and Scales have made a valuable contribution to social work education with the second edition of this work. Drawing from sound research and experience of educators, they have collected resources to help both students and professionals in the task of integrating personal faith and ethical social work practice.
I have chosen to use this book as a supplemental text in my Introduction to Social Work class this semester. Students will read chapters 1-7 as they examine their personal values and the relationship of those values to values of the social work profession. I believe these chapters which give structure to such an examination as well as historical context which will help them make this journey toward self-awareness. Although I have not examined the remaining chapters in the book, a quick read suggests that the same attention and expertise is provided for topics such as spiritual assessment skills and implications for policy, professional context, and new possibilities for application.
