Summary: Meet Joe Selvaggio
Comment: Would you like to meet the Pied Piper of Minneapolis? Meet Joe Selvaggio. Except, it's not children who follow Joe, it's the rich and the poor of the city. Joe has recently been granted a $100,000 award by the prestigious Hill Foundation and was still critical of that orgainzition. If you read this book, you will learn why. You will learn how he went from being a young Catholic priest, begging for his job, to being a 66 year old, gentle and anything but, man, a father of four (three adopted), who rescued his second wife of 20 years, sight unseen, from the clutches of the corrupt Marcos regime, still enticing the rich to give to the poor and the poor to learn how to fend for themselves. While this book is dedicated to James Shannon, the once Bishop of Minneapolis, "a much admired teacher, mentor, and friend," you will learn, in the late Bishop's own words, that it was Joe who served as the mentor, when the Bishop returned to the Twin Cities to begin a new life.
If you already know Martin Luther King and Cesar Chavez, it is now time to meet Joe Selvaggio.
Criticism? Two. I wish this book had of been longer and, although it includes quotes from those he has helped "learn how to fish," it would have been better if, along with the many quite frank testimonials to Joe's many faceted personality, there were included some from his constituents, those who have been served by his powerful voice.

Summary: In the Streets, In the Suites
Comment: This is an affecting memoir by an ex-priest and social entrepreneur who created one of the finest and most effective nonprofits in the Upper Midwest. Project for Pride in Living (PPL), author Joe Selvaggio's creation, is known for its deep level of commitment and creativity wherever knowledgeable people talk about solutions to the problems of housing and self-sufficiency in the inner-city. The book is a readable, irreverent, and often inspiring blend of reflections on the Catholic Church, growing up in Chicago, politics, the poor, courage, commitment, love, and an ongoing search for understanding. Featuring guest contributions from a range of civic and business leaders, and some plain friends, the book has an integrity and fluidity that never disappoints. Laced with humor and wisdom, Selvaggio's book is deeply rewarding to the reader, who walks with this uncommon man on a journey of genuine accomplishment and joy.

Summary: Street Smarts in the Suites
Comment: Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich did an excellent job of giving readers a glimpse of what life is like for the working poor. Selvaggio's book goes further, and provides readers with an understanding of the costs and joys of a lifelong commitment to living among the poor. Here is a true urban hero with all his flaws, exasperating idiosyncrasies, naivete, and stubbornness in full display. His success is a result of his unwavering conviction that social justice will only become a reality when the power brokers experience true empathy with the disenfranchised in American society. His "velvet hammer" approach to change has made him welcome in the streets as well as many suites.
This simple book should be required reading for all community activists--and CEOs. His message of social responsibility for all, and the need for non-judgmental dialogue is a lesson more important today than ever before. His letters to his son provide insight into what shaped his character and formed his commitment. Hopefully, others will be willing to make the sacrifices that he has made to continue improving society one street and one suite at a time.
