Summary: Helps young children understand psychotherapy
Comment: Often when I ask a child why his parents have brought him to my office, the child shrugs or says he does not know. The parents may have tried to explain, but the concept of psychotherapy may be too abstract to explain easily.
This illustrated book is a good way to introduce a young child to the idea of psychotherapy. It helps the child understand why he is going to see a child psychiatrist and what he might expect.
The story describes a bear cub, Ignatius, who has behavior problems while his bear family is experiencing a period of stress. Dr. Pelican uses a combination of individual play therapy and some family therapy to help Ignatius and his parents resolve their difficulties.
The illustrations are humorous and nonthreatening.
