Comment: I am quite familiar with Eugene, Oregon, as I have lived there as a kid from the late 1970s to mid 1980s, and made numerous visits in the mid 1990s, and been there as recently as 2002. Mike Helm wrote this book in 1979 about this city, which is the second largest city in Oregon outside of Portland. I knew Mike Helm personally as he was one of the teachers at the middle school I attended in the mid 1980s (I asked him if he was the guy who wrote the guide book on Eugene and he said he did). The book was a guide on eating and dining around Eugene, as well as trips around the Willamette Valley, the coast and the Cascades. Plus you get info on the parks, shopping centers, and events around Eugene. Mike Helm gives his opinions about different eating and dining establishments, as he's been to these places personally. Things like quality of service, the atmosphere, and most of all quality of food. Since this book is from 1979, most of the businesses listed are long out of business, so it would be of little interest in that department these days. That means if you plan on dining out, or going shopping, you'll have to find a far more updated source to find out what the places that are currently in business are like. The prices given in the book to ride the Lane Transit Bus (LTD) system is long out of date and now have a fixed price no matter where you go (instead of varying prices if you want to head out of town). The parks around town are still much the same, so if you're looking for Alton Baker Park, for example, it's still there. Of course many of the parks have received improvements since those days (like adding on gardens, a skateboard or bike ramp, different playground equipment, or the fact Alton Baker Park now has the Cuthbert Amphitheater, or that their science museum WISTEC is now called The Science Factory). Info can be found on The 5th Street Public Market (which has since been expanded twice in the over 25+ years of its existence), as well as The Saturday Market. For those who lived in Eugene in the 1970s and 1980s, this book will bring back memories to how the town used to be, in regards to what kind of restaraunts were open, and what was available then, like in the form of entertainment. For those who never lived in Eugene, or even been there, this book would be of little interest and you would need something much more updated.
