Summary: An excellent resource
Comment: This book is the first fruit of the work of a team of scholars at the University of Pennsylvania. As of this date, only the letters A (in two volumes) and B (in one volume) have been completed and are available for purchase. The entries in these books are arranged according to the presumed Sumerian word unit, rather than a straight English translation. This means that this book starts with A, proceeds through the A- words (such as a-su) and ends with AxBAD, but does not include Abzu, which is covered in Part II. Each entry contains alternate spellings, source references, and (where sources are unpublished) quotations from resources to give the word's context.

This book is truly a reference book and would not make good "nighttime reading!" It is not intended to be an explanation of Sumerian concepts, religion or what have you. Instead, it is intended to be a dictionary for the scholar to look up Sumerian words, and for that purpose it is an excellent resource.
