Summary: VICTORIAN NEW JERSEY'S DARKEST SIDE
Comment: This out-of-print book is for real New Jersey enthusiasts only; it re-pints (in the original typeface) four "pamphets" which were printed in the 19th century, depicting details of murders, their investigations and subsequent trials. The detail is very dry, and the casual reader looking for lurid stories may have a hard time getting through the book. People had a lot more time to read in those days (no TV or radio), so the articles can seem long-winded.
But if you can get through them, there are some very interesting stories about some gruesome murders, and the pamphets really give you an idea of what life was life for New Jerseyans way back then.
The stories include stories of murders in Morristown, Paterson (in which a woman's body was stuffed in a trunk), a Newark man who killed his wife with arsenic, and a New Market stabbing. Details of the killers' executions are also gruesome.
The last chapter of the book is called "Murders In Print", and gives you brief news reports of other murders from that era.
If you like New Jersey history and are a patient reader, you may like this book.
