Summary: A Great Guide Through Medical School
Comment: " How can I get into medical school?" that is a typical question, which each premedical student asks himself/herself before admission. "What is medical school all about and how can I make it successfully through medical", this is a question that many new freshmen have when they start medical school. The book " Making It In Medical School" by Coombs provides detailed answers to those and many other questions that premedical and medical students might have.
I personally intend to attend medical school so I have read several books concerning the issue "how to get in and stay in medical school" and without any doubts I consider this book as the most helpful one. The book does not only cover all the information that one needs to know in order to gain admission to the competitive medical schools but also each chapter provides valuable hints of what the medical student has to expect during his/her long journey of becoming a doctor. The book is written very subjectively meaning that the information and the hints are mainly based on medical student's experiences. The book is subdivided into four parts and each part covers important issues that are relevant to a different stage of the personal growth of the medical student. The first part the book is well suited for premedical students. It addresses the issues regarding the application process and also it unravels the myth and the preconception surrounding medical school. The second part mainly describes what the first year medical student expects from medical school and how his/her expectation is met by the realities of medical school. This part introduces the common hardships that medical students encounter in their first year such as competition, stress and loneliness. The third part is written from the perspective of a typical sophomore and junior. It describes how the medical students at this stage have successfully adapted to the various challenges of the pre-clinical and clinical work in medical school. This part focuses on patient contact. It provides helpful hints on how to deal with patients and how to take responsibility. The last part of the book provides the senior with a preview of what awaits the medical student after medical school. With the end of medical school the next stage of the long journey of becoming a doctor begins. The last part introduces the professional side of medicine and it provides valuable hints on how to apply for internship and residency.
What distinguishes this book from many medical guidebooks is that Coombs' book is basically a synthesis of many students' experiences. The book uses plain language, which makes it very easy to understand for the audience. In conclusion, I strongly recommend this book to anyone who pursues a career in medicine. This book provides valuable insights on how to get into medical school and how to successfully graduate from there.
