By fusing or mixing these together, you create the elixir of life or philosopher's stone. In the end the aim is towards a spiritual life that is fused with the phsyical life. As the alchemical adage of the times was, "Make fire to burn in the water, and the water to feed the fire. In this lies great wisdom."
