Rating: 5
Summary: Great book to enhance your understanding of railroading
Comment: Having successfully built 2 medium size model railroads myself, I was surprised to learn how much I did not know about building a model railroad. John Armstrong's approach of walking you through every aspects on how real railroads operate (passenger traffic, freight, yards, terminal, track and track laying aso.) and then translating it into approaches to build your model railroad (how do you scale down a yard with 32 tracks, based on your preferences with regards to operating versus modeling?) made me look at my newest project in a totally different light and ultimately prompting many valuable new approaches to modeling problems I was facing or uncovered after reading the book! This book is a good and interesting read; however, it is not for the absolute novice. But if you want to understand the basics about railroading and how to incorporate these basics into your model designs, this book is a MUST.

Rating: 5
Summary: Great Source Book
Comment: Excellent review of real railroading designs and concepts that can be applied to the model railroad. More helpful than a book of layout diagrams since it gives you the concepts and principles that you can modify for your own layout.

Rating: 5
Summary: Outstanding
Comment: Well written, beautifully illustrated and an informative and enjoyable read. Model railroaders, new and experienced alike, will relish in the information provided by this book. This is a quality publication and worthy of being in any model railroaders library.
