Summary: Unnecessarily violent?
Comment: Unnecessarily violent? That's a harsh criticism that I do not believe is true. In all honesty, I do not love the illustrations, but I did enjoy the story. It is a simple story with a good ending. I agree that the story is somewhat violent in that the main character seems to have his mind singularly set on capturing the butterflies at all costs. However, he comes to the philsophical realization that the butterflies are most beautiful (and can best be enjoyed) when they are free. This realization may be difficult for young readers to grasp, but not impossible. The young boy's "violence" is not uncharacteristic for someone his age. I would especially recommend this book for older readers (middle elementary grades) who are at a lower reading level. The vocabulary is simple and minimal, but the story is more mature and can be best be understood and enjoyed by children at this age.
