Summary: ALL-IN-ONE BIBLE LIBRARY!
Comment: For many years, I searched for the "ultimate" Bible. Being an avid New King James Version reader, we don't always have as many resources available as the King James or NIV people. My most useful Bible study tool is many, many cross-references, which I always looked for in NKJV Bibles that had the most. The Thompson Chain has much more than the standard cross-references. The chain references are just that: you go to the alphabetical index to find your subject, (which there are listed around 4,400 different topics) and you go to the first reference, and simply chain through the scripture references. In other words, they are cross-referenced in sequence order! The topics are as detailed as "blue" and as extensive as "God"; these more extensive subjects are then broken down into various sub- topics. Also, in the back of the Bible, the subjects are listed by title, then all the references are given, and the more main ones are chained throughout the scriptures, and some topics' scriptures are written out in the back also! There are also absolutely no commentaries, nor any conclusions drawn in this Bible! I would 100% recommend this Bible (in any version you use) for those of us who love many, many cross references, and believe first and foremost to compare scripture with scripture (1Cor. 2:13) in Bible studies. For those who like this, this Bible has everything!

Comment: In either the King James or New American Standard version, the Thompson Chain-Reference Bible is an excellent study tool composed of a wide variety of references and cross-references constructed in such a manner as to facilitate and enhance the experience of those who seek a deeper and richer understanding of God's Word. As Christians, it is our duty to ever search the Scriptures in order that we may know and fully understand His truths.
It is reported that Dr. Thompson and his wife spent 40 years developing this exceptional work. I can but state that their efforts have born fruit in the realization of a virtual Biblical library housed in a single volume.

Summary: Old NASB but questionable quality control in print
Comment: It has become harder and harder to find copies of the old NASB (NASB 1977) vs. the NASB Update as the newer version has largely replaced the older one. I have looked through the NASB Update and actually find it harder to read than NASB 1977. Personally, I feel NASB 1977 has more of a "college level" feel while the NASB Update (much like the NIV) has more of a "high school level" feel in terms of their use of english. NASB Update and NIV are fine translations but I prefer reading something that is at least at the college reading level.
The Thompson Chain-Reference Bible is one of the last publications of NASB 1977 that I could find anywhere. I purchased the burgundy genuine leather version with thumb index in April 2004.
When you don't have much of a choice, you buy what is available. Here are my impressions of this publication taking into account other reviews:
- no damage in shipping from Amazon using free shipping;
- inconsistent quality control
-- overall, the Bible was in excellent condition. pages were nicely trimmed, ink darkness was consistent throughout (unlike in other reviews) though the red was on the light side, and there was no problem with the binding.
-- closer look revealed flaws in quality control. there was a big gash on the front GENUINE leather cover and it was apparent the inner leather liner was severely folded and creased before someone glued it back in place. this is supposed to be their premium Bible which would hopefully be used for a lifetime. i was surprised this particular print made it to the bookshelf.
-- paper was thinner than my thomas nelson printing and thin enough to allow the letters from the underlying page to show through. i don't mean the print on the opposite side of the same page, i mean two pages before...i.e. the underlying page. whereas my thomas nelson used some special cloth-like paper, the paper in this publication appears like "thin" high quality tracing paper but nothing special.
- i have returned this item to Amazon for a replacement.
- printed in Korea, hopefully by a Christian publication company, otherwise it would be a shame for a Bible publishing company to succumb to bean counting.
