Summary: The best book I have read this year
Comment: This is quite simply the best book of mathematical retrospectives that I have ever read and close to the best set of retrospectives as well. Eves is a master writer and in this book he gives us a series of glimpses into his life that kept me reading. I acquired the book at the MAA table at the Mathfest conference in August of 2002 and completed it before the day was out. I read it every chance I got, between presentations, during lunch and while drinking tea. I was camping at the time and finished it by flashlight well after the sun had set. The stories reveal a man who is great in so many ways beyond just his career in math. He is charming, light-hearted and yet there is an occasional burst of sound philosophy that really sneaks up on you.
This is by far the best book that I have read this year and I encourage everyone to read it. You will not learn any mathematics, but you will learn much about how to approach it and enjoy doing it.
