Summary: THE tactics book for players rated 1500+
Comment: (I'm about 1900 ELO)
For books on combinations/tactics I look for a couple things:
1) Do the positions in the book resemble those that occur in actual play?
2) Are the positions varied enough, even within a theme?
3) Are the puzzles challenging enough?
4) Are there enough puzzles to justify the price tag?
In the case of this book, the answer to all of these questions is a resounding yes.
I believe that one of the main lessons that one can learn from this book is that tactics very often make surprising appearances in the most tedious looking of positions.
Players with ratings of 1500 and upwards will benefit most from 1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations. The puzzles are varied and challenging enough for most.
For the beginner unfamiliar with the various tactical themes, I would recommend reading Winning Chess Tactics by Yasser Seirawan first, then progressing to this book. The main reason for this is that Reinfeld does not really do much in-depth explaining of tactics in this book. Seirawan on the other hand walks you through the basics quite competently. I firmly believe that these two books are all the average chessplayer needs in the realm of tactics.
As noted by others, the main disadvantages of 1001 WCC&S book are the descriptive notation and the occasional solution error. This doesn't really bug me but if you're expecting a book free from these nuances, be forewarned. I don't see the absence of a hint section as a problem, since in an actual over the board game, you can't ask for a hint.
All in all this book met (and to an extent surpassed) my expectations. A combinations book is only as good as the positions selected, and I think that in the current case the positions selected are an asset rather than a liability.
Strongly recommended for 1500+ players wanting to sharpen their tactical skill and for those with a love of solving puzzles (especially handy in the airport, or on a plane.)

Summary: Fast way to improve your chess
Comment: This old classic is the best inexpensive tactics workbook available. It's intended for players who already have knowledge of basic tactical motifs and want to improve their combinational skills. By working through these exercises you will improve your ability to recognize positions where a tactical blow is available, and will be able to calculate the tactics quicker and more accurately than before. In other words, you will become a much stronger player.
There are newer and more refined tactics workbooks in algebraic notation (Maxim Blokh's The Art of Combination is the best I have seen), but Reinfeld's book is still a bargain. This inexpensive book is a tremendous tool for improving your chess strength. You can throw this little paperback into your briefcase or backpack and take advantage of the idle moments in your day to hone your tactical skills.
Don't let the descriptive notation deter you. It's not as concise as algebraic notation, but you can quickly adapt to it.

Summary: Tactics anyone?
Comment: It is said that "chess is 99% tactics" (Teichmann). That may be an overstatement, but it is widely accepted that it is one of the most important components of the game. This great book is filled with problem after problem that refine your tactical skills in areas such as double attacks, skewers, pinning etc. After you finish each section you will feel armed to the teeth in your ability to recognize and utilize each specific tactic. The tactical skills you obtain from this book will provide you with the tools you will use for many victories in the future. I am a little over a third of the way through the book and I love it. Meanwhile the binding is trashed - but that is probably due to overuse. I also own "combinations, the heart of chess." I bought that one because the title grabbed my attention. That was before I even knew the importance of tactics and combinations. Incidentally, Reinfeld's book is better organized, although the problems are outstanding in both. I now realize that I stumbled upon the two premier tactics books. One thing I love about this book is that it is perfect if you want a book that doesn't require a board to be set up along side it. I always take this book with me on flights and long trips. If you must have one chest book, this might be the best place to start. Strategy/planning books like Reassess Your Chess are also a good place to start, but they require a tremendous amount of hard work and discipline. Anyone who is interested in developing there chess skills should own 1001 Sacrifics and combinations. It is high yield and easy to read.
