Summary: A Bright Beacon in the Dark Night of Biblical Brainwashing
Comment: Did you ever wonder why the God of all Creation would choose a small tribe of nomadic peoples known as the Israelites to reveal the Truth to, and not reveal it to others at the same time? Ever wonder how a lifetime of 80 or 90 years could justify an "eternity"of reward or punishment?
If so, the discrepancies and faulty logic of the Bible are nowhere better pointed out than in this eye-opening book. McKinsey is cooly brilliant in his exposé of the many contradictions and downright "un-Truths" to be found in the Bible by anyone who can step outside of its brainwashing influence long enough to read what's "really" there! And you will be shocked! The hundreds of thousands of murders and other atrocities commited by the self-admitted angry and "jealous" god of the Hebrews puts him in the company of such villains as Hitler, Mussolini and Ghengis Khan! McKinsey utterly devastates the Fundamentalist claims of Inerrancy in the New Testament as well by alerting us to the numerous points where the four Gospel writers not only disagree, but actually contradict each other!!
I'll not attempt to fill you in with point by point examples. McKinsey does that well enough to ensure that any sincere reader will come away with a new understanding of the Bible and how it's being used by Fundamentalists to control the thoughts and behaviors of others through selectivly quoting the verses that support their agendas and hoping none of us will notice the ones that this book points out.

Summary: Best book since The Age of Reason on debunking the Bible
Comment: This is, by far, the best book ever published on the subject of biblical errancy. It successfully documents the many errors, contradictions, and absurdities in the 'best selling but least read book' in the world. I find it invaluable for debunking ALL christian beliefs; conservative and liberal alike. It seems as though some of the obvious liberals who have written reviews here have ignored Mr.McKinsey's argument about drawing the line. Many, if not all, liberals agree with the agruments in this book; but only if the literal intrepretation is used. Who decides when a literal intrepretation should or should not be used? Mr. McKinsey gets to the heart of the matter in the opening chapter. The story of Adam and Eve is a good example. God told them they would die. The serpent said they would not die, but would obtain knowledge about good and evil. Taking the Bible on it's word, they did not die. Christian apologists contend that the death refers to a 'spiritual' death. That is just pure rationalization. I take it to mean die, period. Some liberals even go so far as to deny the existence of Adam and Eve. By doing so, the christian scheme of salvation crumbles. The book is somewhat repetitious, but that is a minor problem. I especially liked the many quotes from fundamentalists that acknowledge the fact that if there is just one error in the Bible, the whole of christian theology is in jeopardy. I couldn't agree more!

Summary: We shouldn't need this book....
Comment: From the Preface -"This book and Biblical Errancy teach a kind of Sunday School in reverse by telling people all of the things they should have heard on Sunday morning but didn't. After all, if atheists, agnostics, freethinkers and humanists don't reveal the contradictions, errors, fallacies and problems in the Bible, who will?" And the next 500 pages provide a compact, well organized reference that's a great companion to Callahan's book The Secret Origins of the Bible, which shows WHY the Bible is so riddled with problems. Besides the well known errors, including self contradiction, in the creation and exodus myths, the book provides an excellent source for discussions and debates on science, math, astronomy and social issues. Most of th e book is uncontroversial among modern bible scholars; unfortunately the increasing influence of biblical inerrantist fundamentalists in American discourse requires this book.
