Summary: pleasing introduction to the world of the beat...
Comment: Before beginning to read this book I really didn't know what to expect other than a tale that would invigorate my desire to hop in a car and travel across America with only my closest friends. Not only was that fulfilled, but it also gave me an insight into a truely chaoctic, yet carefree American lifestyle, embodied in the character, Dean Moriarty (Neal Cassady), and more importantly the most eloquently written prose to the mood and performance of Jazz music that I have ever read.
It doesn't exactly take a literary scholar to have a pretty good idea of what the plot of this book involves just by reading the title. Even though a "road trip" is expected the way Jack Kerouac gets from city to city is always an exciting journey. Whether he is meeting with characters symbolic of Jack Kerouac, Allan Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, or Neal Cassady. The characters are outrageous and spontaneous, similar to Kerouac's writing style.
Regarding the subject of Jazz in this novel; it certainly plays a key role during Sal Paradise's and Dean's search for enertainment while traveling. The passages that involve "God" (George Shearing) provide an amazing mental image of a tortured jazz soul, along with countless other musician's who play a key role during Sal's trip.
Overall this book is a fun and easy read, the spontaneous writing style is very fresh and the mental imagery is definately one of the best out of a novel post 1950. Definately a classic on my list, and apparently many others as well.

Summary: Unique classic novel of 20th Century American fiction.
Comment: As a junior in college, I was hesitant to read a Kerouac novel because of the negative connentations associated with the "Beats". While contemplating reading "On the Road", a friend nakedly asked me, "isn't that book about drugs?" My reply "I don't think so", couldn't mask my nervousness about the content of "On the Road". Was I about to read another dated novel about a scene whose time has passed? Well let me assure the quisical reader that this novel is the complete opposite of tired and dated. Kerouac is an amazing, inventive, and charismatic writer who entertains with every word. I assure you this novel is as entertaining as advertised. The plot revolves around the adventures of Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarity(thinly veiled altered egos of Kerouac and Neal Cassidy) as they cross the country in search of an illusive yet ever present freedom. Enjoyable scenes
1. Paradise's first trip from the East Coast to the West Coast. The descriptions are joyously vivid and intensely enjoyable. Wow!
2. Kerouac's descriptions of a jazz show in San Francisco. His enthusiasm for jazz is well-documented but this scene conveys the love for jazz like no other author has done before or after.
Enjoy this novel with an open mind and a love for powerful writing.

Summary: A Book Like No Other
Comment: It's a stream of consciousness time book, that gives you a feeling of empathy for the main character Sal Paradise. The one he idolizes is also a misfit, but Sal sees the holy in him.
It's a book about the underground life of Sal, his pal Dean Moriarty, and the others they run around with. In the end..I believe Sal has learned something from his idol, something that will help him on the rest of his life's journey.
Very interesting book, and I'm glad I finally read it. I have met people like Dean in my life, and now my sorrow for such characters goes deeper than ever.
