Summary: A Misinformed author is a Soviet sympathizer
Comment: Mr. Mandel's book on the minorities of the former Soviet Union and his ideas about their history is nothing but a travesty on historical facts. It is a work, if one can call it that, of a misguided and misinformed individual. As a well-known West Coast Soviet sympathizer and apologist , who promoted his pro-Soviet views on a Berkleley radio station, KPFA for a number of years, he paints a rosy picture of the "other" people of the Soviet Union. In fact, millions of the "others" were murdered by the Soviet KGB shock troops or died in the gulags of the Soviet Union. He does not talk about the realities of the Soviet Union, but instead, relies on his vivid imagination.

Summary: fascinating and informed
Comment: I found this book a very interesting read. Mr. Mandel's travels and interest in the vast cultures of the former Soviet Union shed an interesting light those in the States were not privy to. To this day this book informs me of who the "Russian" people are. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the people of the world.

Summary: A grossly misinformed view of the Soviet Union
Comment: This book is without question the worst book I have ever read about the Soviet Union. Judging by the author's views of the Soviet Union as a state tolerant of religion and ethnic diversity, he is either a communist sympathesizer or knows nothing about the Soviet Union. In the chapter about Muslims in the USSR, the author cites a Soviet appointed Mufti as an authority on how tolerant the Soviet government is towards Muslims. Never mind that the Mufti was appointed by the government and was likely a KGB informant. The chapter about Soviets of African descent was interesting, but also showed the author's complete ignorance of Soviet realities and the public's attitude towards blacks.
