Summary: An Unsung Welsh Genius
Comment: Since Kate Roberts wrote in Welsh, she is largely unknown outside of Wales. Joeseph Clancy's splendid collection should change that. Roberts was an extraordinarily gifted writer and paints vividly detailed pictures of life in North Wales in the early 20th century. She captures the desperation and resignation of the human experience as well or better than any other short-story writer that I can think of. This is not twee Celtic sentimentality, it is an open compassionate view of the struggle, hardship and joy involved in human existence seen as she experienced it in Wales. Despite the precarious nature of working class life depicted in these stories their is never a sense of hopelessness or despair. She never resorts to becoming sentimental or nostalgic...it is simply life as it was (and is). Her love of Wales and its language and people are clear, but only serve as microcosm for the human experience. I read this book 10 years ago and return to it often. She is one of my favourite authors and deserves to be known well beyond the Welsh-speaking world. Simply inspiring...
