Summary: The best overall training book of its kind.
Comment: This book is one of Koehler's best. It contains the most effective methods for training dogs in the three levels of protection; alert, threat and attack. This book will take you through each level of of training with easily understood explainations and pictures. If you want to protection train your dog with humane but thorough methods of training, this book is for you. I have used Mr. Koehler book for training all of my dogs and my customers dogs in my security dog company and had perfect results every time. Sylvan Malis.

Summary: What is old becomes new again...
Comment: Many people would contend that some of Koehler's methods, as outlined in this book, are 'cruel' or 'inhumane'. I have a different opinion to that, as do the vast majority of protection/obedience dog trainers that I have spoken to.

A dog does not have the ability to reason, and Koehler's methods show the dog clear consequences for its actions. Let's put this into human terms...

... ...

Koehler's methods show a dog exactly that - a clear choice. If the dog does what it knows how to, and is capable of, doing, then it is rewarded for this. If the dog knows, and is capable of, doing a task, yet CHOOSES not to, then it is punished for this.

Koehler's methods make the choice for the dog simple - perform the behaviour desired by the handler and I will be rewarded, NOT perform and I will be punished AND not get a reward.

Many of Koehler's methods are used still today by leading protection dog trainers around the world, and I have seen them work first hand on hundreds of dogs.

Whether or not you agree with Koehler's principles or not is a personal choice, but one thing is clear - THE METHODS IN THIS BOOK WORK QUICKLY AND EFFECTIVELY TO PRODUCE LASTING AND RELIABLE RESULTS.

Rating: 1
Summary: outdated abusive methods
Comment: I run a very large training school and have been training dogs for over 20 years. The methods outlined in Koehler's books are 40 years out of date. Training has changed, and nobody needs to hurt their dog and call it dog training.

This author recommends "correcting" digging by filling the hole with water and holding the dog's head under "until he's sure he's going to die", and doing this for several days in succession. He recommends "corrections" that include hanging the dog on a choke chain with his feet off the ground, and chides the "soft" owner who may then feel sorry for the dog that vomits and collapses. He recommends such dangerous techniques as duct-taping a chewed object into a dog's mouth for *days* to punish chewing. He recommends threading a dowel through a rubber hose and hitting the dog with it for up to 20 minutes to "correct" some problems..... and on, and on.

Positive dog training is now the standard for dog trainers all over the world. He may have been the only game in town 30 years ago, but now we have better techniques and options that are very successful and build a better bond than one based on fear and force.

Please read "Positive Puppy Training Works" by Joel Walton, or "The Power of Positive Dog Training" by Pat Miller, or any of a myriad of other excellent positive training books out there.
