Summary: Essays of varied quality
Comment: This book contains essays divided between (1) New Testament Studies, (2) Old Testament Studies, and (3) Historical and Theological Studies.
(1) The Word Became Flesh (Herman Ridderbos), Love in the Johannine Epistles (Leon Morris), On the Social Identity of Early Christians (F.F. Bruce), Revelation 18:17 (C. Spicq), Semantic Change in the Greek Bible (M. Silva).
(2) Trial by Ordeal (Meredith Kline; on the book of Job), David's Census: Perspectives on 2 Samuel 24 and 1 Chronicles 21 (Raymond Dillard), Israel's Struggle with the Religions of Canaan (Elmer Smick).
(3) Arminianisms (J.I. Packer), John Calvin, Lawyer and Legal Reformer (W. Stanford Reid), Friedrich Spanheim (Roger Nicole), Federal Theology: Review for Revision (W. Wilson Benton Jr.), Southern Presbyterians and Slave Missions (John Akers), Church and State in Dutch Calvinism (W. Robert Godfrey).
The essays vary in quality (of course that is my judgement). The essays by Ridderbos, Silva, Kline, Dillard, Smick, and Packer are outstanding. I bought the book used in order to read Dillard's essay along with any contributions concerning Old Testament Study but have been somewhat pleasently surprised by some other entries within the book. If you like it or not will boil down to your interest in the areas addressed by the essays and in what esteem you hold the authors (should be very high, I think, even for the ones with whom you diverge in theology).
