Summary: A remarkably personalized history of a girls' school.
Comment: Though out of print, this is a book worth resurrecting as we debate -- again -- the issues of how girls and boys learn differently. There may be lessons to be learned here. What is most remarkable about this history is that it is made so lively and personal by the interviews, notes, letters, memoirs and memories of the women who attended Abbot. Susan Lloyd has delved into the motivations, the politics, the finances and the personalities of those who founded the school and ran it through its 145-year history. The students and their experiences, the faculty that shaped those experiences and the "higher ideals" of education are woven into a narrative that is instructive and funny, sentimental and thoughtful, filled with both anecdotal memory and strong emotion. A 'must-read' for alumnae; a new-to-read for those who argue both sides of single-sex education.
