Rating: 5
Summary: Excellent for naval buffs, wargamers
Comment: For each class of ships covered, has extensive discussion of design evolution. Ship modification history is well treated - modifications are grouped into decade-long periods, in which ships got refreshed with bulges, AA armament, better rangefinders etc.

There is much discussion of the advancing naval technologies, and their impact on the fighting value of the ships. This kind of treatment, written in a single volume comparing apples to apples, is of great background value to wargamers and those interested in game design.

There are other books available that more thoroughly cover the WW1 period of some of these ships.

A more thorough set of photos and drawings accompany the text in the Anatomy series, but these books cover only one vessel each, and not all these classes are represented in that series.

Compared with "Allied Battleships" by Garzke and Dulin, they intersect on coverage only with the KGVs and the Vanguard, so a buyer would choose on the basis of interest in British ships only vs French, Russian and Dutch ships.

Summary: The Best Reference BUT......
Comment: As many have mentioned before, this is the best reference book on its subject. HOWEVER, inquire before ordering. According to NIP this book is not being reprinted as scheduled.

Summary: SIMPLY THE VERY BEST REFERENCE BOOK AVAILABLE
Comment: I agree with the other reviewers-this book deserves 10 stars. I have a very worn out first edition that I recieved as a birthday gift many years ago and it is still a fabulous treasure trove on information about Royal Navy battleships. I am glad to see it has come back into print so I can give my first edition a rest and have a new one to enjoy. An outstanding work of reference and nothing like it has been published since. Readable, detailed and filled with amazing illustrations. Mr. Raven, Mr. Roberts--you are HEROES!!!How much bribery would it take to get you both to do a similar work on US battleships?
