Summary: A decent introductory for younger readers to the Apaches
Comment: When the first European explorers reached the new world the Apaches lived in the lands that today are Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Kansas, and northern Mexico. In 1848 the United States Army began its war against the Apaches, but it was not until 1886 that the last group of Apaches led by the warrior named Geronimo were forced onto a reservation. However, in this Native American People volume on "The Apaches," Barbara A. McCall looks at not only that well known part of the history of these people, but their early history once their ancestors crossed over from Asia. Young readers will learn how these early wanderers and quiet hunters developed agriculture and the practical art of basket weaving. Chapters are devoted to the clothing of the Apache, their spirits and ceremonies, and their tribal bands.

The last half of the book looks first at the attempt by the governments of Mexico and the U.S. to control the Apaches, who were considered the "tigers of the human species." The bounties offered by the Mexican government for Apache scalps is contrasted with the great chiefs who led the war of resistance against the U.S. government. A final chapter touches on the lives of 25,000 Apaches living in the United States today. "The Apaches" is illustrated with historic photographs and paintings by Luciano Lazzarino. The back of the book includes a brief list of important dates in Apache History and an index. The result is a decent introductory volume to the story of the Apaches that provides basic information about this Native American people. It is just that there are several competing volumes out there that offer more information with better production values, so this is not a good first choice (although it might be more effective with younger readers as an introductory effort).
