Summary: Classical scholarship at its best
Comment: The sixth book of Appian's "Roman History" is the only continuous narrative of the "fiery war" between Rome and the native tribes of the Iberian peninsula. Here is recounted the heroic exploits of Viriathus, the futile defiance of Numantia, even the occasion which prompted the beginning of the civil new year to be moved from March 15 to January 1. Erudite and informative, Richardson provides an excellent introduction and extensive historical commentary. A welcome alternative to the 1912 Loeb edition!
Rating: 2
Summary: Very inferior to Polybius and to Livy
Comment: Nothing to say about the edition: it is good.
The author, however, is very inferior to Polybius and to Livy as a narrator and his sense of Spanish geography is deplorable. So, what does he bring to the party?
I recommend you buy one of the others rather than this one.
