Summary: What Manner of Madness?
Comment: Many religious traditions command that madmen be protected or cared for. Some go so far as to revere madness as a form of blessing -- a vehicle for divine revelation. After reading H.C. Moolenburgh's "A Handbook of Angels" I wonder if the founders of these traditions weren't just fascinated by the ravings of madmen.

Moolenburgh provides a combination of (competent) biblical exegesis, case study, and pop occultism in his fascinating angelology. He ranges in his discussion from simple religious sentiment to bizarre political commentary. He speculates that angels are closely related to charged sub-atomic particles, and that when Tesla found a way to power a car 'from the ether,' he was drawing on angel power. He recognizes the Seraphim's call ("Holy, Holy, Holy" or "Kadoosh, Kadoosh, Kadoosh") as a reflection of the sound of the surf, and explains that the surf, caused by gravity, is just another reflection of this angel power. He warns that only the angels, who give life to the atoms, can save us from the nuclear war that Communists will launch without regard. After all, Communism has no belief in moral doctrine. They don't have feelings the way you and I do.

He touches on UFOs, psychic phenomena, obscure points of physics, astronomy, and pop psychology. All the while, he is so sincere that I feel hard-pressed to call him wrong. I can't bring myself to believe what he believes, but I'm enthralled. This is not a book for serious scholastic speculation on angels, although I would be interested to see such a work from this author. Still, for those who, like me, are fascinated by these sort of feverish speculations, this book is worth reading.
