Summary: Biblical and Practical
Comment: I appreciated this book on many levels. I am a new father always looking for wisdom relating to this monumental role. My wife and I read this book together and found it incredibly helpful. We were surprised to glean as much from the book for our own personal lives as we did in the area of parenting. The authors posit the following seven emotional skills as the most critical for children to develop: Respect for Authority, Delayed Gratification, Self-Awareness, Empathy, Social Awareness, Motivation/Persistence, and Hope. They end the book with an excellent chapter on intimacy with God. It is clear from the text that the authors are committed Christians with a high view of Scripture. They avoid "psychobabble" and provide many illustrative examples from both the Biblical narrative and their own personal experiences. This insightful book challenged my wife and me to model these skills for my child in creative and practical ways. We look forward to implementing their counsel.
