Summary: An introduction to the history of the six Apache tribes
Comment: "The Apaches" is a look at the six tribes that make up the Apache nation: Chiricahua, Jicarilla, Mescalero, Kowa-Apache, Lipan, and Western Apache. Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve makes a point of showing her young readers both the similarities and the differences between the six tribes, beginning with a combined retelling of the creation myths of each tribe. She then covers their government, family life, traditional ceremonies, and warfare. Of course this volume in the First Americans series looks at how the lives of the Apaches were permanently altered by the coming of the white man. Sneve shows how from the first contact with the Spaniards this was a hostile relationship, capped off by the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that put the Apaches under the control of the U.S. government. At that point the relationship remained hostile, with the Apaches putting up one of the fiercest resistances under famous leaders as Cochise and Geronimo. In addition to the idea that the Apaches have become successful members of modern society while preserving their unique heritage and traditions, it is the idea of their resistance to being forced onto the reservations that becomes their defining characteristic. "The Apaches" is illustrated by Ronald Himler, who has collaborated with Sneve on other books in this series on the Cherokees and Hopis. This book provides a nice introduction to the story of the Apaches for younger readers.
