Summary: Better characterizations are needed in new B. Small book
Comment: After being somewhat dissapointed by the quaint, but lackluster THE INNOCENT, I had high hopes for BEDAZZLED. As a hugh fan of the Skye O'Malley books and many of Small's other families like the Leslies' and the Wyndhams', I was expecting a wildly romantic story in that tradition. India was a spoiled brat, with none of the charm of her Grandmother Velvet in THIS HEART OF MINE. By the time you warmed to her a character, you were at the end of the book. Jasmine aparently lost all her spirit and common sense. James Leslie was a pompous self-serving whiner. Just because their romance was not the focus of this book is no reason to so drastically alter their personas'
The strongest character in this book was Fortune. I hope Ms. Small can recapture her love of the characters she created for this family in the next installment. On another note, I thought the death of Janet Skye was really a low blow to the readers. Yes, I realize it was common to lose children young, but this is a romantic, historical FANTASY!

Summary: So disappointed!!
Comment: I usually love Ms. Smalls books. I have been avidly reading them for sometime now. However this storyline is getting quite old. Frankly I am getting a little disgusted how these women from the O'Malley series put up with harems and sharing their men with others. Most of her characters have spit and vineger, however India is just plain stupid and silly. She is not what I would call a firey young woman, but an incrediably shallow, self-centered twit with the intelligance of a nat!

Summary: A Pleasant Surprise
Comment: After Darling Jasmine, which I loathed, I wasn't expecting to enjoy Bedazzled. Imagine my happy surprise when I found this to be a most enjoyable read! Okay, sure, the heroine's a petulant pain in the rear, but then again this is what makes her a "character". I gleaned from how the book was written that Small was somehow thinking of slightly parodizing herself. Most of all, I thought this was a good, straightforward story, lighter on the erotica and more centered on the plot.
