Summary: Exposing the female underclass in 19th Century France
Comment: Dr Yates provides a well researched, highly readable, and clearly argued exposition of the role of women as portrayed by Balzac, Maupassant, Zola and other French male writers. Whilst widely available in Australia, thanks to holdings by several Australian university libraries, this book, a revised version of her PhD thesis completed at Columbia University, is far less well know in North America and Europe. I most strongly recommend it: not least, as a template of rigorous readable analysis providing access to a wide audience, to high school and undergrate students....
