Summary: A real Harleyford Classic
Comment: Though already 20 years in publication when I bought my example, it still was well worth searching for. Now, twenty years later again, this book has stood up well against the time. Nowhere there is a part in the book where you think 'but that was covered in far greater detail in another book', the only thing that differs from the more recent standard references is the amount of colour used in photographs and paintings.
Even Alfred Price, who wrote some very good books about the Spitfire said "Readers requiring more detail on individual marks of Spitfire are invited to refer to Spitfire, the story of a famous fighter by Bruce Robertson, the most comprehensive work on this aspect of the aircraft" And this from the man of classics as "Spitfire at War" and "Spitfire, a Documentary History" If he says so, who am I to say he's wrong?

Summary: An oldie but goodie. Worth a search.
Comment: This was the definative "Spitfire Book" for decades. In many ways it has never been equalled. Many black and white photos, 1/72 scale 3 view tone paintings of the various marks. If I could have only one Spitfire reference, it would be this book. It was solidly bound, and copies have stood up well. It is worth searching out a used copy.
