Summary: "Fat Albert" still tops
Comment: "Fat Albert," as we used to affectionately call this book in undergrad, was yet another of those books teachers told us would be "a good shelf reference book." It was the main textbook for three of my classes so I reluctantly bought it. Now, five years later, and in my second year of dental school I still find myself relying on this book to clarify topics covered in classes ranging from Pharmacology to Physiology, and from Biochemistry to Immunology. In addition, Fat Albert is my go-to book for my research in a microbiology lab.
It was, and still is the most engaging and useful of any textbook I have ever bought.

Summary: understanding the cell is key, this is an awesome text
Comment: If you want to try to understand life, then understanding the cell is central, and this text book is apparently the best and most authoritative introduction to the subject at an advanced level. I suppose that most readers would be serious biology students, most of whom intend to do research either in biology or in a closely connected field like medicine. As for myself, I am a mature scientist in a completely different field (experimental physics), and I was motivated to read this book after being both tantalized and frustrated by superficial layman books. At first I was worried I might not have the background to understand the material, but I was delighted to find that all the concepts are explained carefully from the start. It is an awesome book, revealing life to be extremely rich in complexity while at the same time based on simple logical principles. The recent revolutions in this field, many of which are explained in the text, makes me almost wish I had chosen to work in biology instead of physics.

Summary: Big Error on Page 463, 464
Comment: On page 463, allele frequency is described as (1/2 x N) (=0.5N). No that's wrong, the correct one is (1/2N)(=0.5 x 1/N). it's a typo, but a huge difference. I lost one question in my mid-term because of this!
