Summary: Solid biography of a leading social gospel preacher
Comment: The social gospel is one of the most interesting periods of American religious history, to me. Studying it in depth I routinely came across mention of Gladden, one of its earliest preachers and one of the most prominent. Dorn does a fine job in this book of explaining Gladden's life, from birth to death. His views on numerous issues are discussed, some in better detail than others. Most interesting to me was the intriguing glance at Gladden's disagreements with and opposition to Billy Sunday, a fellow evangelical with a totally opposite style and message. I am not a huge fan of biographies, which I generally find dull, but recommend this to students of American history or religion. Nothing spectacular, but solid.
