Summary: David Rockefeller, A Life Well Lived...
Comment: For the past 30 years my family and I have vacationed in a small village near the Rockefeller's in Seal Harbor, ME and we have enjoyed the generous gift his father made to all of us, Acadia National Park, while walking the carriage trails in Acadia. In reading David Rockefeller's autobiography I appreciate the importance of hard work, service and thoughtful rearing in creating a good person. Wealth does not excuse one from applying and using all one's talents to achieve a well-lived life of distinction and purpose. Rockefeller has done that and I thank him for writing about that life.
It seems as though David Rockefeller was involved in many of the important events of the past 70 years and often played an important part in them. One of the strongest impressions I have after reading the "Memoirs"is the personal disgust I have for the chaotic and nihilistic behavior and reprehensible values of many Americans in the 60's and 70's and the great damage this caused everyone, including the very wealthy. Fortunately, Rockefeller and his wife were able to keep their values and high-standards in their lives. Hurray for a life well-lived and well- told. Truly, a remarkable journey.

Summary: A superbly written book
Comment: "David Rockefeller Memoirs," is a comprehensive and superbly written book that examines the life of a successful banker and a famous American family. David Rockefeller was born in 1915 and this book is a examination of the role he played in domestic and global economic affairs during the past 50 years. Moreover, it also provides a strong window into his wealth and how he and his family funded many worthy causes.
The author examines the good, the bad and the ugly. He describes the evolution of Rockefeller Center in New York City with pride, he admits his support for the Vietnam War was at odds with that of many in the nation, and he pragmatically describes the many frictions within his own family. However, an important insight of this book is how David Rockefeller played an enormous role in U.S. foreign affairs.
To this end, David Rockefeller is clearly one of the most important executives in the history of Wall Street. Rockefeller joined the Chase Bank in 1946 as an assistant manager in the Foreign Department and his memoirs describe his rise through the ranks to become chairman of the board. The author admits the road at Chase was bumpy and writes that at one point he feared he may be fired by the board of directors.
The historical value of this book cannot be underestimated. Rockefeller examines the life of his grandfather, his writes about his many travels...particularly to the Soviet Union, China and the Middle East. I found his chapter on the Shah of Iran fascinating. Overall, this book is easy to read and offers front row insights of how international banking impacts global affairs.

Summary: The Enormous Responsibility of Power
Comment: My mind keeps returning to the Memoir by David Rockefeller the same way it does to politics, in appreciating the enormous power wielding by him, by that family, and by the numbers of persons like them do have more than an ordinary interest in the wealth, prosperity and success of America. For his own part, the Memoir is an opportunity to understand how it came to be so, and the highs and lows that come with making such extraordinary wealth. It is also an opportunity to discover the man or men behind the myths, and to learn that they are, at best, much like ordinary persons, despite their wealth, with a well developed and keen sense of how that wealth may be used to better mankind, or to ultimately destroy it. For David, I was particularly interested in his relationship with Peggy, and would love to learn more about that since it appears as though they had an especially loving and compatible relationship through which they both appeared to have been inspired, and enjoyed sharing the joys of life that people can when they do have such relationships. The sadness of a soldier of life having to tread on without his mate is often one that is far undervalued, and at least for women, produce the desire to know about the woman she was far better than could be explained in a memoir about her husband. Because the entire family has heightened influence over many financial networks that influence political networks, as well as in a more than average investment in education, scholarly works, and philanthrophy, the values of such a family are important to a nation, and that can often be best described and explained by the female head, perhaps, in this case, Peggy, even if it must be done by her children because it is usually the softness and tenderhearted female spirit in a family that provides much of the emphasis upon charitable work. There are few women of means in a position who can be a role model for other women of wealth, and it becomes the important work of illustrating how grandeur of personality provides the momentum and enthusiasm for many great works. Considerable effort was made in the Memoir to properly attribute much of that spirit to his mother, but my guess is that it was nurtured, fostered and flourished because of his wife. Therefore, it would be great to follow up with a book especially about her, .....for the women....so they are not forgotten, (as the reminder from Abigail Adams was to her husband in her highly publicized letter to him). I can't imagine a more pertinent topic than the opportunity to discover how two very important persons handled their lives together, and were able to accomplish not only children, but also the building of the empire they managed where coordination of efforts and spirits must have been required to make it all work. It is a topic right for the 21st Century, and it would be a great accompaniment to recognize the importance of them both, and their joint approach and diligent attitudes to help guide others. Because great beginnings always deserve wonderful endings.
