Summary: The faith of the faithless
Comment: I expected from this book an attempt to provide actual proof that the biblical Jesus did not exist. What I found was a maze of unproven theses.
The theories and arguments are meticulously put together from an academic point of view, but form does not automatically result in function. The book proves nothing. The reader is presented with a detailed theoretical debate about Jesus but nothing more. Non-believers will feast on the theoretical possibilities presented in this book and will enjoy a renewed feeling of victory. Believers, on the other hand, will view this book as proof that even someone as thorough as Wells, who has spent 30 years of his life trying to destroy the power of Jesus, couldn't succeed.
This book doesn't offer much, but it does offer one magnificent insight: It reveals the incredible amount of faith needed to be a non-believer.
In order to accept what Wells tells us, we need to put a tremendous amount of faith in his facts and arguments and in the hundreds of researchers Wells, in turn, has put his faith in. Of course, few readers (if any) will ever do their own in-depth studies on the validity of each and every assertion presented by Wells and associates. So, how can we as readers decide whether Wells deserves our faith? For me, an easy test was to run a quick check on Scripture quoted by Wells to see for myself whether his interpretations were reasonable and contextual. They weren't. Not by a long shot.
Here is an example. Wells argues that the Bible condemns ALL rich people. Wells writes: "The threat is not restricted to the godless rich; to be rich is in itself a sin leading to condemnation." Wells then references James 5:1. Okay, so far. But when I read the rest of James 5 it became abundantly clear that the rich who are being addressed have abused their labourers, have lived in self-indulgence and have murdered innocent men. After this misrepresentation and many more, I lost my faith - in Wells, that is.
I guess what I learned from this book is that all people have blind faith. Some put their faith in God. Others in intellectual storytelling.

Summary: Good book
Comment: This is a good book. It should be noted that the review here by "revtompaine" is actually by Rev. Dr. Gregory S. Neal, from Neal's article entitled, "Who is G. A. Wells", and therefore probably should not be in an amazon.com review.

Summary: A candle in the dark
Comment: When it comes to books about the evidence for Jesus, authors will never be able to provide an adequate argument to convince the religious that their belief is not based on reality. You cannot overcome conditioning with just written words. G.A. Wells is more intelligent than any conditioned person whether they are lay people or employed by the church as is the "Rev." "Dr." Gregory S. Neal, Pastor of the Beverly Drive United Methodist Church whose members, combined, have the I.Q. of zero. You would think that it would be up to the claimants that Jesus was real to provide the evidence for him. But, alas, it is always up to people such as Mr Wells to do their homework. This books is as good as it gets as are Mr Wells' other efforts. Denying the truth is the church's position since if they were to come clean the church would dissolve and the pope and all of his minions would have to find other lines of work, aside from molesting children.whatever you do for yourself, do not be misled into thinking that religion is based on truth, it is far from it. Besides, what are humans achieving by believing in something that was created by man to fool and control humans? When you read reviews about Mr Wells' books you are either going to accept what he writes because you are intelligent and can tell truth from fiction or you are going to dismiss truth in favor of fiction. When you dismiss the truth, you are no better than those who sell religion to the gullible. Are you gullible? I'm not. Thank you Mr Wells.
