Summary: This is a great book!!
Comment: I love HP, but I needed something to read while I waited for the next one to come out. This book is awesome! (and just as good as Harry Potter) I couldn't put it down. Many people say that it's a copy of HP, and there are some... similarities, but I'd say it goes in a different direction, especially in the magical sense. If you liked Harry Potter, you'd definitely like this book. Charlie Bone lives with his 2 grandmothers (one evil and one nice), his strange great uncle, and his mother. His father mysteriously died many years ago. Very weird talents run in his family, and he knows what people in pictures are thinking. When his evil grandmother finds out, she sends him to a strange new school with some very excentric characters.

Summary: Mom's Review
Comment: My son's a 3rd grader (age 8) who loves to read. He's read all of the Harry Potter books several times. I was just looking for something similar, because I know he likes the fantasy style. When he was finished reading Midnight for Charlie Bone, I picked it up. What a great book. Lots of mystery... not too dark! It was very well written and I enjoyed it too! This one's a can't miss for your Harry Potter fan! Jenny Nimmo's writing is fun, interesting and intriguing, just like J.K. Rowlings.

Summary: Ripoff or Homage?
Comment: Either an homage or a ripoff of Harry Potter (depending on how much you like the book), Midnight for Charlie Bone follows Charlie as he discovers his "endowment": the ability to listen to what was being said as photographs are taken. This supposed gift causes the sinister Yewbeams to enter Charlie's life. When Charlie is sent to Bloor's Academy he soon finds all is not well. Considerably darker than Harry Potter, the book introduces a large cast of characters some of whom will no doubt play larger parts in the books to come. Lacking much of the majesty and sense of a well thoughtout world that give Harry Potter so much of its charm, many Harry fans will no doubt like the many similarities, and some will no doubt like the darker tone of this book.

The narration on the audiobook can be hard to understand at times, but the narrator does a mostly good job of breathing life and personality into each of the characters.
