Summary: A Little More Should be Expected
Comment: Rizzi has a great concept and approach, but she falls short on checking the accuracy of her work. The section on Japanese incense seems poorly researched, leaning too heavily on previous works like Kiyoko Morita.

Summary: Excellent reference material for Incense, herbs & resins
Comment: A very impressive reference book on Herbs, Incense and Resins. The chapters cover historical use of incense through herbs and resins in Northern Europe, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Crete, Greece, Arabia, Israel, The Americas, India & Japan. It covers an extensive amount of material including how plants & resins were used and burned for ritual & daily purposes, describes each plant discussed in the chapter with illustrations and modern references and lists incense recipes from those specific cultures. Wonderful Illustrations of each plant and resin are included!!! This book is a must for any student or scholar passionate about natural incense using herbs and resins. I personally use this book extensively for research and it always yields new and amazing material. I also have followed a couple of the incense recipes and have come up wonderful results.

Summary: A Great Book With An Imperfect Title
Comment: This book is wonderful to learn the history of many aromatics. It traces the history of many common aromatics as well as explaining the use and nature of some unusual ones. It is, however, not the 'complete' book that I would have liked. However, I definitely recommend it to anyone with an interest in the historic uses of incense as well as the origins, harvesting techniques, etc. A definite must for any incense user or maker.
Unlike many books, this incense book does not ignore European or American incense traditions. Those claiming the Japanese section of the book was "poorly researched" are almost exclusively Japanese incense importers who are promoting their own business interest with their negative comments. The Japanese section is very good and well researched, it just won't help put as much money in the pockets of the incense cult leaders as the drivel they publish on the web. Trust this book from an excellent writer over any nonsense you read on the web from those promoting their own products.
It is unfortunate that this book is getting harder to find since it is one of the most wide-reaching histories of incense around the world. No, it's not "complete" but it comes closer than any other book about incense.
