Title: Sweetie Here's the Best Reason on the Planet to Say No to Your Boyfriend : Even If You've Already Said Yes by Debra J. Palardy ISBN: 0-8059-4875-9 Publisher: Dorrance Publishing Co Pub. Date: 08 May, 2000 Format: Paperback List Price(USD): $10.00 |
Average Customer Rating: 3.92 (13 reviews)
Rating: 5
Summary: If they said yes, there woud be no need for pressure!
Comment: This book wasn't written to make girls feel spineless. In fact, it's just the opposite. You can't say no without a spine. While you're saying no, you're receiving pressure to change your mind. If you choose to say yes, you don't need to be pressured. This book is about pressure to say yes. It's about all the tricks boys try, to make girls change their mind. Only girls who have a spine, in the first place, need this book. Those are the girls who will be pressured, because they said no.
It's really for young girls 12......and up. Those are the girls who don't know all the tricks boys play yet. There is nothing in there that a 12 year old can't read. There's nothing in there she doesn't absolutely need to know. She does! They can find out from boys on the spot, or from sweetie. The sad part is some boys don't care if a girl is too young to say yes. Boys have proven that over and over for centuries. They ask! We know they ask! We can either tell our daughters what those boys will be saying, how long they will be saying it, with how much pressure they will be saying, and it's all in sweetie, or we can hope for the best.
Personally I never know when my daughter has stopped actually listening and is just politely nodding. She can't do that when she is reading. I'm going with sweetie for my sweetie.
Rating: 4
Summary: Recommended, in spite of its weaknesses.
Comment: It's misleading to call this a "book"; I think "pamphlet" is a better word. It's a thin paperback, only 34 pages long - with the last 18 being blank pages for "notes"! The first 8 pages consist of a bullet list of the lines that boys use to pressure girls into going farther than they want. This leaves only 8 pages for the real material.
The author is not a professional in the field, and the writing style shows it. It's written in a very conversational style, full of opinion and structured in a haphazard manner. Lots of slang, including some that I don't use around my pre-teenage kids.
Yet I still give it a good rating. This is one of the most important topics that a teenage girl needs to know about, and the advice here is sound. It exposes the issue very frankly, and gets right to the point of how to deal with it.

Summary: How about a book guidebook for boys?
Comment: I agree with the other reviewers: This book should be given to boys to read also. But, somebody should write a book about lines that girls use on guys. I remember going out on a third or fourth date with a girl. She wanted to do a "little shopping" before we went to the restaurant. She picked out an outfit that cost about [$$$], went into the dressing room and put it on, modeled it for me, and solicited my approval with comments like, "Don't you think this is is just too cute?" After the clerk rang up the sale calmly said, "I forgot my purse." Both she and the clerk looked at me. I put it on my credit card and we went to the restaurant. I never say her wear the outfit because she never returned my phone calls after that night.
