Summary: Nail on the head!
Comment: As a fellow Kansan, I have long wondered what makes "Red" states like Kansas vote for those who have a history of governing in ways that have been devestating to these state's own best interests. Frank finally nails it in this light-hearted, yet ironically chilling book. If you think the answers are simple, or that one day these conservatives will "wake up", you need to read this book. I picked it up and couldn't put it down until I finished.

Summary: Save Kansas!
Comment: As books on American politics go, Thomas Frank's latest book is remarkably well done. "What's the Matter with Kansas?" gives an intriguing look into the political history and current political environment of Kansas in an attempt to explain how the state lost its radically progressive nature of the past and became, instead, the central home of American conservatism, a philosophy he believes does very little to represent the state's working class and agrarian needs. Although I am not particularly flattered by Frank's portrayal of my home county (what he marks as the notorious Johnson County), I am sadly in agreement with him on the relative failure of my state in electing officials which truly represent our interests. But this book is not just about Kansas. It is merely a microcosm in the larger American political arena, representing not only itself but countless states and counties across the nation.
Frank's book, although at times a little simplistic, is a surprisingly entertaining read, rare for a book addressing such a complicated history. His anecdotes actually hold your interest which is a problem with many books dealing with such topics. Lastly this is a work which I would recommend to conservatives as well as liberals; recommended to anyone tired of hearing about "red" and "blue" states as if those descriptions were appropriate explanations of an entire political tradition. American politics is far more complicated and (at times) confusing than what Michael Moore and Sean Hannity would have you believe. "What's the Matter with Kansas" effectively explains these contradictions through the description of his native state in a manner which is both enlightening and entertaining.

Summary: Take from one that is here......
Comment: A fine book that suffers occasionally from over generalization ( e.g., the portrayal of Wichita sounds like Michael Moore's Flint , Michigan) but in the big picture Frank makes a compelling argument that is difficult to refute. The over simplistic pop conservatism that has swept our state, and let's face it the nation as a whole, started off as being just annoying but has now evolved into something a whole lot worse. Frank tackles the reasons why with a clear, concise writing style that makes this book enjoyable and informative on many levels.
