Summary: Nothing like "Confederacy"
Comment: While this book is nothing like Toole's CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES, it is nevertheless, a great read. Comparisons have been made that Jackson McCrae's BARK OF THE DOGWOOD is like a combination of Toole's books in that it combines the slow "country" feeling of NEON BIBLE, with the past-paced, rollicking and colorful Southern "city" of DUNCES. I'm not sure about the comparison but I do know I like all three books.
NEON BIBLE is slower than DUNCES and while you'll recognize Toole's humor and wit, there's an element of the slapstick missing. Also, if you know Toole's history and what eventually happened to him (suicide), this book will have all the more meaning for you. Actually, I'm more reminded of Robbins with his EVEN COWGIRLS GET THE BLUES or other works of his with regards to Toole's style and wit. Dark humor, and underlying sadness, and yet very funny and knowing, like Pychon, NEON BIBLE is full of depth and insight. It's not a mature work (condiser when Toole wrote it) but it holds up against some of the other things out there being passed off as books nowadays.
I'd recommend NEON BIBLE for anyone who like DUNCES and for anyone interested in the sad, short life of John Kennedy Toole.
Enjoy.

Summary: The Neon Bible
Comment: After recieving a Pulitzer Prize for A Confederacy of Dunces, John Toole's The Neon Bible was published in 1989. At the age of 16 he was writing this book for a literary contest.
In a small, southern town in Mississippi lived a boy named David. He spent most of his time taking walks and following around his Aunt Mae. He grew up relying on her thoughts and opinions which later conflicted when she wasn't around.
The town was so consumed with the politics of the church and they forgot the real meaning. As a boy, he was ridiculed for not being a part of the church because his Poppa didn't pay the dues. David could see the light of the neon bible shinning bright from his home. To him the bible was a symbol of God fearing neighbors. From page to page we learn his thoughts and feelings about life, love, and religous views. David's thoughts and feelings conflicted with his inner-self and surroundings.
As a young writter Toole wrote an easy to read, but yet descriptive novel. Throughout the book he uses flashbacks, similes, and metaphors. The book had a constant flow that made it enjoyable.

Summary: The genius is a genius no matter his age...
Comment: and it`s amazing he can make words become an explosion of pyrotecnics.
His knowledge of English and his inborn talent and sensibility drove him to leave a Heritage to Humanity: Confederacy of Dunces, and also Neon Bible... If you look deeply into the lines of this man, you`ll cry in grieving for his tragedy expressed in LAUGHING....
God must have him writing upstairs....
