Comment: Found what?

The best Jeffery Deaver novel so far!

I came to this novel, a grin on my fave. 599 pages (English paperback edition) of a Jeffery Deaver adventure lay afore me. I couldn't wait to read it. A little tingle came over me, and i knew from the sound of the book that it was going to be good. I couldn't wait to get stuck in.

And i wasn't disappointed one bit.

This is thoroughly excellent book, utterly enjoyable, and superbly thrilling. It is definitely Jeffery Deaver's best yet.

I loved the wonderfully involved and complex plot, the wonderfully well drawn characters, and the ever developing relationship between Rhyme (who is a thouroughly brilliant protagonist) and Sachs (perfect as his partner.) His writing is sharp, terse, tense, and to the point. Nary a word is wasted in his thrill-fest of twists and turns, coupled with some devilishly clever plotting.

This one i loved, the best, out of all his thrillers so far. The setting was so well evoked, and Rhyme's clever deduction is a as compelling as ever.

This is a highly reccomended novel, many many pages of a wonderful story, packed full of Deaver's trademark twists (although once he does go a bit over the top). Nevertheless, and exhillarating read. Buy it now.

Summary: A GREAT READ !
Comment: If you are picking up a Lincoln Rhyme novel for the first time; rest assured you are in very good hands. Jeffrey deaver has developed his character extrememly well over the three books and though some people crib about the ploy of using a quadraplegic detective; trust me, it works and how ! . In the Empty Chair; Rhyme is not only a fish out of water(out of his familar NY surroundings) but he also has to grapple with trying to convince Amelia sachs that he has to undergo a complicated operation which could leave him worse off but which could also give him some additional mobility if things go well but before that he has the local Police department asking for his help in locating 2 kidnapped girls and from here on, you are in classic Deaver territory; he piles on the chills and the thrills without ever sacrificing the characters in favour of the plot, the ending is a virtuouso tour de force and it was virtually impossible to second guess the outcome of the book. Garnett's obsession with Insects was a great touch and though like one reviewer mentioned ; it is a little reminescent of Silence of the Lambs; Deaver has managed to make that detail fit perfectly into place in the context of the book. I am not going to divulge the further twists and turns but believe me; if you start reading this book in the evening; you can be sure that you are going to have a late night trying to finish it. I would have given this book a perfect rating except for the fact that towards the end; great though it undeniably was, I could not help overcome the feeling that it was written to be made into a movie, it read too much like a screenplay. Don't let that stop you though, read it, it is one terrific ride and you are going to have a good time, Guranteed !

Summary: Not nearly as good as the first two books in the series
Comment: If you know Deaver's series about quadriplegic forensic investigator Lincoln Rhyme and his love affair/sidekick ex-model-turned-into-cop Amelia Sachs, you'll realise "The empty chair" has all elements to give continuity to one of the best thriller series I know: a murder, kidnapping, interesting forensic details, Rhyme and Sachs running against time, etc. But this third book is not nearly as good as the first two, "The bone collector" and " The coffin dancer".

Why is that? In my opinion, one of the greatest things about Lincoln and Amelia is the feeling of closeness the reader gets when reading about the crippled investigator. Lincoln is always in his state-of-the-art medical bed, surrounded by latest technology forensic equipment, and Amelia is Lincoln's eyes and legs. This combination prooved to be very good and adequate in the first two books.

In "The empty chair", Lincoln and Amelia are not in New York anymore. They have traveled to North Carolina, where Rhyme will undergo a cirurgy that may restore some of his nerve connections. But while wating the cirurgy, the local sheriff asks Lincoln to help him in a murder-kidnapp case. From there, Deaver gives the reader his usually competent plot. The problem is, in this book character development is way below average. It's full of stereotypes. Even Rhyme and Sachs are a little worn out. Other characters are flat and I often confused one with another in the first pages of the book. The final solution of the mistery is simply ridiculous, when you think in Jeffery Deaver's terms. It's the kind of solution used in bad first-books by unknown authors in the eighties. Deaver disappointed me badly with the last hundred pages of "The empty chair".

I hope "The stone monkey" is much better than this one, because Rhyme and Sachs are too good a team to be forsaken.

Grade 6.3/10
