Summary: I Love Me
Comment: With this book Dr. McGraw hits the nail on the head ... so to speak ... or does he put a mirror of truth in front of your face? Well, anyway, as usual McGraw is blunt and as direct as he can be and once again his advice is not for the faint of heart, because the reader may discover something very special or perhaps sensitive about himself/herself. This is McGraw's strategy and through all of this his advice is helpful and beneficial as he motivates to face the truth about one's self. Great book! Another book that has a more gentle approach, but is just as direct touching sensitive areas of one's life, and I highly recommend this book, is Dietmar Scherf's "I LOVE ME: Avoiding and Overcoming Depression."

Summary: An Insightful Read
Comment: "Self Matters" by Dr. Phil is a very energetic, clear, insightful read. I felt like a student being lectured to by an awesome Professor. I had to take breaks at times (lots of info). He provides various projects and questionnaires which serves to assess the state of our individual being. Through his analysis, he clearly points out we are all a result of life's
conditioning. He coaches us into discovering our 'core', center, authentic self, from which to live, an alternative to the old, unexamined, mechanical, stimulus response behavior we've learned (from other people & past experiences) for survival. He insists with his urgent, in-your-face style that living from your 'core' yields authentic joy, freedom, clarity,
and true self-expression. The book is semi-psychoanalytical in feeling, in a fun and sometimes humorous way. According to this book there is work to be done, but hey, it's worth meeting your true self and living a full and satisfying life!
If you like this book, you may want to try the collaborative work of Ariel and Shya Kane's "Working On Yourself Doesn't Work." It's a great follow-up book to "Self Matters." I found it a refreshingly different path leading to a similar place. Their non-judgmental, being-in-the-moment philosophy and the 3 principles of transformation offer a more anthropological way of looking and discovering our true selves. It's a gentle, effortless read with many profound insights simply and directly stated. Love the illustrations provided and yes, I did most certainly meet myself on so many of the pages......Oh, and it's a great pocket pal to take on vacation or to keep in a backpack for an immediate uplift and to get back on track with your life.

Summary: A lot of hard work ... but worth a try.
Comment: This really is not your average self help book. Dr. Phil is just so straight forward and easy to "listen" to, that this book really can hit the spot. If you are truly dedicated to reconnecting with yourself, with finding your 'authentic' self, then grab a notebook and a pen with lots of ink, because with this new and exciting book from America's Dr. Phil, you will definitely need it. I admit I did not do each and every exercise in writing, because I like to read in bed, but what I did not do in writing I tried to do in my head (not the same - I know!) and I actually did come up with some pretty startling revelations about myself! I do believe that if you follow Dr. Phil's advice, if you totally dedicate yourself to the task and really buckle down with the writing exercises, you can achieve the goal - finding and living your authentic self, instead of all those plastic personas we all wear in different situations. If you choose not to write the exercises, I recommend the book anyway, because Dr. Phil is never a waste of time, and his narratives in this book are no exception. A truly remarkable and in depth look at the human self, Dr. Phil has navigated his way into our thoughts - again!
