Summary: This book stopped me from going a little crazy
Comment: This book made my existence possible during my short research expedition in Africa. I'm a primatology grad student working on my Ph.D. Earlier this year I got a job as a fieldworker in the Congo to study wild gorillas. Our field site was a long, long way from everywhere; not even the native pygmies lived that far out in the jungle. I lived in a tent, ate rice and beans filled with dead bees, had no running water or medical care, and was constantly being charged by enormous angry gorillas and occasionally elephants which are even scarier. I'm sure I stank the whole time, but to make me feel like a person again, I'd crawl into my tent at night, light a candle, and crack open Massage: The Ultimate Illustrated Guide. Looking at the pictures and reading the text put me back in a place where I could remember frappuccinos, day spas, diet soda, yoga classes and air conditioned libraries. Yes I love those things, I just didn't realize how much. It is a book about pancultural massage, but even that idea is really quite American. I loved it. I felt like I was getting a massage every time I looked at it, like I was reconnected with other people in my culture, somebody who spoke English, at the very least. Thanks to Claire-Maxwell Hudson, I was able to actually gather a little data. I brought the book home with me and when things get awful I look at it again, and I feel better. Thank you, Claire.

Summary: Disorganized, lacks sensuality, hard for the beginner
Comment: Ms. Hudson can't resist the temptation to throw in dozens of obscure massage practices from her extensive travels. The result is needlessly complex and snobby. If you are willing to make the effort you will learn something here and there, although some of the techniques are quite difficult. I'm not convinced that even Hudson knows how to do them. To sum up, this would mainly interest a massage fanatic. It's hardly an "ultimate" book on the subject. In the end, I returned my copy.

Summary: Wonderful for the whole family
Comment: This book is excellent for families. From intimate couples massage, to pregnancy, labor, and infant massage, it takes you through all the stages of family life. I have given this book in a bridal shower basket with oil and candles with great comments, especially when their first child was born a few years later. Wonderful details and vivid photos.
