Comment: Most of the time when a reviewer reads a book, he addresses the subject matter, thematic patterns, ideological consistencies or inconsistencies or some other area directly related to the writings on the page. But in this case, since I have more than 600 articles in print, let me discuss the author as the basis for the title of the book. Maria Vidal de Haymes not only writes about Latino poverty, but she has fought against it most of her life. As a young Cubana who came over during the Marielito boatlift, she and her parents settled in tiny Lincoln, Nebraska where she proceeded to graduate summa cum laud. But she was not just a student during that time; as the director of the Hispanic Catholic Center, she single handedly turned a two story structure into a strong and viable entity and paved the way for Latino rights in that city. She left there to attend graduate school at the University of Chicago where she tackled one of the hardest curricula at that racist institution and at the same time worked for Catholic Charities, in and around the Latino community and ended up as the director of the Governor's Planning Council for Developmental Disabilities -- one of the first in the country. She then went to work on her doctorate, and every paper she wrote made a contribution to a better and more profound understanding of la cultura in general, and Cubana culture, in particular.
So if she has a role in this book, then it will be a reflection and reinforcement of what she has always stood for. A woman of energy and conviction, she would not have written or edited this work if it contained anything short of articles that can lead to the elevation of Latinos in toto. She is a warrior-princess in an age of civil rights charlatans. Read the book and, like me, you will be truly inspired.
